The high-flying trumpeter has spent the last few years plotting a course to the nexus of funk and swing. It’s an ever-shifting landscape, but the temperament of the search makes Roney’s music so fascinating. The new If Only for One Night, a live disc, ably illustrates the agility and ass-kicking his current outfit is capable of. It reminds that spontaneity thrives on stage. Fingers crossed that this gig rocks out while brokering some fierce and filigreed brass solos.
