Jean-Michel Pilc Trio

There’s never been a lack of lyricism in the pianist’s work, but the new True Story finds him applying his obvious virtuosity to the pretty side of things. Pilc 2010 has a way of conflating whimsy and wistfulness, so the offhand remarks found in “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” and “Try to Remember” seem like cousins of a sort. The poetic spirit of drummer Billy Hart helps all the chugga-chug take on a abstract air as well. The trio is just back from Europe, so expect a little mind meld in Midtown.
