Vegetarian (and Vegan) Delights of NYC: Body & Soul’s Roasted Vegetable Turnover


If happiness can be described as a warm carbohydrate with fillings, then Body & Soul’s roasted vegetable turnover is an excellent way to achieve some measure of both psychic and digestive harmony.

A staple of farmers’ markets throughout the city, Body & Soul sells a line of sweet and savory baked goods that cater to both vegetarians and vegans. Their roasted vegetable turnover is vegan: The filling contained in its sturdy yet pliant cornmeal crust is comprised solely of roasted vegetables, including sweet potatoes, potatoes, and carrots. It’s seasoned with Indian spices, and tastes of curry powder, cumin, and turmeric. Though the spices are present, they’re not overly assertive, and provide a good, mellow match for the turnover’s peppery cornmeal crust.

The turnover is substantial, and at $5 makes a good lunch or very filling snack. While quite tasty on its own, it partners particularly well with yogurt or chutney.
