Brian Jonestown Massacre lead singer Anton Newcombe is in no hurry to change his reputation, which is solidly off the charts on the Richter Crazypants Scale. No hurry; he’s been one of neo-psych rock’s most aggrandizing cult heroes since the ensemble formed in mid-’90s San Francisco, and by now, even his most frustrated fans still embrace his unhinged space-drone tracks. February’s Macca-taunting Who Killed Sergeant Pepper?, released on Newcombe’s own A Records, herded in a caterwauling Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir cameo, multiple grumpy sci-fi Easter eggs, and the catchiest blip, “Let’s Go Fucking Mental” which, by now, seems an tacit assurance for both giver and receiver.
