To the great joy of those of us who enjoy consuming food on large swaths of grass, Governors Island will be open to the public beginning this Saturday, June 5. Water Taxi Beach will return with its lineup of burgers and wieners. They will provide but a prelude to the carnage that will descend upon the island next month, when Josh Ozersky hosts his seventh annual Meatopia on July 11.
The event, which Ozersky will co-host with Jimmy No. 43’s Jimmy Carbone and Fatty ‘Cue’s Robbie Richter, will feature some 30 chefs — including Seamus Mullen, Nate Appleman, and Michael White — barbecuing a mind-boggling assortment of animal parts, which will come from such vaunted purveyors as EcoFriendly Foods, Flying Pigs Farm, and La Frieda Meats.
As Ozersky told Feast last month, this year’s Meatopia, which is open to the public for the first time, will be “on a scale that’s radically different and immensely more ambitious than any Meatopia that’s ever been done in the past.” The Meatopia website estimates that 5,000 people will attend, assuming they’ve recovered from the Big Apple Barbecue. Tickets, depending on how much you want to eat, range from $25 to $150; a portion of the proceeds will benefit Just Food and Slow Food NYC.
