New Amsterdam Will Go Weekly; the Brooklyn Flea Will Have Milkshakes, an Ice Cream Social, and Camera Obscura

When we ran into Robert LaValva a couple of weeks ago at the City of Merchants fundraiser, the New Amsterdam Market founder shared the exciting news that the monthly market would be going weekly. And now it’s official: Beginning on September 12, purveyors will begin selling their wares every weekend at South Street.

In the meantime, the market will kick off its summer season on Sunday, June 27, with a special bread pavilion, while the August 22 market will feature an ice cream and dairy fair.

Speaking of dairy, the Brooklyn Flea has announced that the Milk Truck is now selling milkshakes at both the Saturday and Sunday markets. This weekend, the Sunday market will more or less revolve around frozen treats: Starting at 2 p.m., there will be an ice cream social down in the vault, with a soundtrack provided by a short live show from the Scottish pop band Camera Obscura. If you thought the crowds in the vault were impressive before, then the spectacle of indie pop fans jostling for space with sweaty gastronauts should be a sight to behold.
