There’s never any problem with the tenor maestro getting all rough ‘n’ tumble; waxing wooly is a natural part of his eternally expressive blues lingo. Which is perhaps why his nine-piece outfit boasts a big band clout as well as a Birth of the Cool vibe. Last time I caught ’em, I was tickled by the way Lovano actually united those seemingly diverse approaches. Thrill ’em with punches or thrill ’em with precision, it seems.
