MARCH OF THE FLIPPERS

by

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-Ariel is en vogue once again as mer-culture dominates Coney Island at the 2010 Mermaid Parade. King Neptune Lou Reed and his regal wife, Queen Mermaid Laurie Anderson, lead the procession of scaly, glittery, no-legged beauties. The 28th annual art parade pays tribute to Coney’s early-20th-century Mardi Gras by encouraging outrageous dress, rambunctious behavior, and an aptitude for taking off your clothes. After the march, King Reed and Queen Anderson lead the crowd to the beach for the opening of the summer swimming season. But be careful—saltwater has been known to smudge mermaid-colored body paint, which you’ll want to have intact for the post-parade
