Fresh off her appearance at the Minehead, England installment of All Tomorrow’s Parties, where curator Matt Groening definitely achieved Juana Molina superfan status, the Argentinean singer/songwriter plays both a Lincoln Center Out of Doors gig and this one, part of the ongoing, free Music on the Oval series. Molina’s music is pleasantly without category, or care for one; while brushes of arid Latin guitar and lattices of pedal effects and electronics remain constants, her compositions rarely follow a pattern, and instead meander like an inviting walk in the Andean foothills above the Chubut River. Are there touches of Tropicalia in here? Tom Zé? Maybe. The improvisational flavor and Molina’s fantastic voice make this music shake hands with itself as it looks outward for fellow travelers.
