Fairway Café Saved From the Chopping Block


Even if the bluefin tuna can’t get a break, some endangered species do manage to find reprieve. To wit: The Fairway Café will not close.

The café, which sits on the second floor of the Upper West Side grocery store, had been threatened with closure by store management, which was reportedly going to turn the café into a coffee department. But supporters rallied with an online petition, and now it appears that the café is here to stay. Gael Greene reports that while 300 square feet of the restaurant will be converted into a bagel baking station, it will otherwise remain intact. At least for the immediate future: Fairway executives are planning to revisit the issue in 10 to 12 months.
