Maybe I’m just not up on the lingo of the tech world, but why is a new product always set up to “kill” an existing product? Aren’t these unrealistically lofty expectations, especially when the thing you’re trying to “kill” — in this case Facebook — has nearly half a billion users worldwide? Tech genocide? Eek. Anyway, that’s the Sunday afternoon rumor, courtesy of Digg founder Kevin Rose, who tweeted, “Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon “Google Me”, very credible source.” Huffington Post, of course, already has the news up — calling Rose “The Snitch” first posted on SF Weekly‘s The Snitch — because they’ve developed that chip which they secretly insert in everyone on the internet’s heads and by the time you have a thought, it’s already aggregated with an SEO-optimized headline. Cool, right?
Honestly I’m too busy playing around on Google BuzzWave (what, you don’t have that third-party hybrid app?) to really care about the next product launch from the search engine masters in Mountain View. Stop giving us so much good shit! Really, though, Google… you’re 0 for 2 this year, with your products becoming punchlines hours after launch. Maybe take your time with this one.
Then again, all we have is this:
“Google Me” is like a pick-up line if you’re a douchebag.
But speaking of Facebook, here’s the first teaser trailer for the film about its founding, The Social Network, directed by David Fincher and starring Jesse “Movies That End in -Land” Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake, as the guy who started Napster. It’s “PUNK”:
