Long a Jersey noise and indie icon thanks to his Troubleman Unlimited Label, DJ Mike Simonetti has recently branched out into dance music, founding the Italians Do It Better label with Johnny Jewel. As Portland-based Glass Candy, Jewel and chanteuse Ida No serve as the label’s break-out band. Covers of Kate Bush and Kraftwerk reveal the group’s retro roots and, despite Simonetti’s protests, it’s hard not to see the label name as an Italo-disco reference—but their smooth sound is always uniquely their own, and ever-engaging.
