It’s a nice duo idea from the pianist and saxophonist. Both are relative newcomers on the local scene, and both have impressed already: Tepfer with Lee Konitz duets, and Wendel with his Kneebody work, as well as the terrific Simple Song. Each has a yen for structure, but both like to steadily recalibrate the action at hand to see if flap A will ever fold into slot C. It’s an ongoing conundrum, but these two are fully equipped to tackle it. Expect some old fashioned beauty along the way. Wendel has a way with Strayhorn’s “A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing.”
