Every year on the Friday before the New York City Triathlon, about 500 people in their skivvies gather in Central Park for the Jamaica Underwear Run. This may be the sporting event in the city that requires the least equipment—just show up in your undies (and a pair of shoes) for the 1.7-mile race. Sponsored by the Jamaican Tourist Board, and JetBlue Airlines, there is also a contest to win a trip to Jamaica for the runner with the best “Jamaican costume.” We can’t find a definition for that, although there is a video with last year’s top contestants, which is worth watching on YouTube. (By the way, the Naked Cowboy was there last year, but we don’t know if he participated or just showed up for the photo op.) And in case you didn’t know, there is a world record for people gathered in their underwear. Last year’s run broke that record with 448 entrants, and more are expected this year. Alas, registration for this year’s run is closed, but this is a great spectator sport.
