The genius of Rivers Cuomo isn’t really in his catchy melodies—plenty of people can do that. No, the real trick is in his decision to paint around them with superfluous crunchy guitars, even though they hooks are as poppy as can be. That very move has given him labels from alternative rock to emo to indie, which means his records keep selling and he’s free to continue writing such awesome hooks.
