It looks like the Amato Opera House won’t become a bar: At last night’s Community Board 3 SLA meeting, the owners of V Bar, who have taken over the Amato’s lease, revealed their plans to transform it into a three-level theater and restaurant.
Eater attended the meeting and reports that the owners explained that “the concept, which is at least a year from completion, would call for a 100-seat theater showcasing work from various theater troupes, and possibly other entertainment like magicians.” The theater would occupy the basement and first floor, and the second floor would be home to a 70-seat restaurant and bar. The board voted to approve the owners’ liquor license application, so long as the theater continues to operate as advertised.
Eater also reports that the board wasn’t quite as generous with the new owners of Sin Sin/Leopard Lounge, and rejected their application for a license transfer. Unsurprisingly, plenty of neighbors showed up to oppose the application.
Along another stretch of East 5th Street, it looks like the former home of Seymour Burton/Butcher Bay will become Ghost Town. Given the lackluster history of the space, the owners may want to consider a different name.
