This summer may break high-temperature records, and just in time for the heat wave that never seems to end, there are some new icy desserts in town. Last week, we told you about the new shaved ice available at Hanover Cafe on St. Mark’s, and now we hear of fancified shaved ice at Oceana and of a novel slushie truck making the rounds.
Thrillist reports that Kelvin Natural Slush Co. is the brainchild of a former lawyer who wanted to create all-natural, adult slushies without the neon food colorings and nasty additives of the ones you find at 7-Eleven. (The name comes from the Kelvin temperature scale, in which absolute zero is the coldest you can get.) Kelvin’s slushies are made in flavors like spicy ginger, citrus, and green and black tea, with the option to mix in fruit purees and/or a scoop of ice cream. They also apparently make good mixers, but you’ll have to supply your own booze. Check out Kelvin’s website to find out where the truck is at any given time, or call 646-200-5083.
Meanwhile, Oceana chef Jansen Chan has just added shaved ices to his dessert menu. There’s a choice of three flavors: English (strawberries, raspberries, whipped cream, toasted sliced almonds, tapioca pearls, vanilla crème anglaise, toffee sauce); traditional, which is shown above (kiwi, strawberries, sweet potatoes, tapioca pearls, lemongrass gelee, whipped cream, condensed milk sauce); and light (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, raspberry syrup, honeyed yogurt).
