The second night of SPIN magazine’s 25th anniversary celebration is headlined by Flaming Lips, the band responsible for The Soft Bulletin, the 64th best album of the past quarter century, according to the magazine’s recent list. (Take that, No. 65, Marshall Mathers LP.) Honestly, though, there couldn’t be a more fitting band for the festivities: the Flaming Lips, who predate SPIN by two years, helped pioneer forward-thinking, not-quite-ready-for-primetime alt-rock with melodies obtuse enough to fit in a giant hamster ball.
