Welcome to 100 Dishes to Eat Now, Fork in the Road’s handy list of some of our favorite dishes — old standbys and new finds alike — compiled daily.
Today’s pick: Potato Flatbread ($4.50) at Sahadi’s, 187 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn ferry to Governors Island stops at the tail end of Atlantic Avenue this year, which means the ravenous, picnicking masses will hop off public transport at Court and Atlantic and seek provisions before embarking upon their journeys.
But lo! Ignore that gleaming behemoth, Trader Joe’s, with its promises of cartoon bearded men, cold pre-wrapped sandwiches, chips, and layered dips. Hie thee to Sahadi’s.
The burbling, oft-crowded Middle Eastern grocery has a small deli tucked in the back, which is known as a savior for Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights denizens who don’t have time to cook for their parties: Hot-from-the-oven lamb meatballs in tomato sauce; the famous Sahadi’s hummus; excellent spanakopitas; pan-fried cauliflower; and a very good tiramisu all line the glassed-in case.
The other day a new creation appeared: potato flatbread. Flecked with what looked like thyme, onions, crisp potatoes, and a few red pepper flakes, it looked like it could triumph over what would otherwise be a dry combo. And it did. The potatoes are pan-fried with herbs like thyme and cilantro, and onions that have taken on a sweet, caramelized sheen, and the whole of the thing — popped onto pre-made flatbread — is topped with a flurry of crunchy scallions on its way out of the oven. Potatoes on bread: It ain’t light, but it’s lovely, with a lush mouthfeel from the potatoes and a kick from the chile flakes.
It’s also cheese-free and vegetarian, so you’ll make friends at the picnic if you offer around bites. And it won’t spoil — a dream to tote around in your bag or bicycle basket. Pair it with an IPA or a hefeweizen (in a bag or a coffee cup, silly!) and enjoy the island.
