Feeling nostalgic for your dad’s old-school VW Beetle? Utterly fascinated by the hippie vans of the ’70s? Want to yell “Slug Bug” and hit everyone in sight? You can satisfy all these urges at the Volkswagen Traffic Jam, a classic VW auto show on Governors Island. More than 30 vintage VWs will be displayed on Picnic Point, where—go figure—there will also be a picnic. Spectators have the privilege of picking “Best in Show” for several categories, including best Beetle, dune buggy, and custom job. If you want to nerd out even more, there will also be a VW History and Hobby Rap Session (a/k/a “Beers With Bob and Jeff”) at noon in the beer garden. Bob Cropsey, author of Volkswagen: History to Hobby, and Jeffrey Hicken, the president of the Central Jersey Volkswagen Society, will lead a discussion about the iconic cars and their devoted following. Cape Ann Brewing Company will be supplying fuel for the day from a 1978 Westfalia camper van. If you’re too lazy to pack a sandwich for the picnic, food vendors will be on site to clog your arteries with hot dogs and ice cream from Blue Marble. Rain or shine, it’s Beetle time.
