Steve Cuozzo is pointing the finger today at Mayor Bloomberg, who he says is responsible for Tavern on the Green’s ongoing state of limbo. In his New York Post column, Cuozzo details the political dealings standing in the way of a new incarnation of the famed restaurant.
Quoth the Cuozz:
No sane restaurateur wants to run Tavern as long as the city insists it give away the store to the New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council, or Local 6. But any future Tavern license-holder will have to. Mayor Bloomberg made that clear in June when he said the city would “solicit new proposals with labor obligations.”
Local 6 president Peter Ward not only supported the mayor’s push for a third term when other unions didn’t, but also backed Bloomberg’s land-use plans. Apparently, the failure of Dean Poll, who was to take over the operating license from longtime holder Jennifer LeRoy, was a result of not being able to make a deal with Local 6. So, like so many other things, the landmark banquet hall could disappear for good because of, well, politics.
