The trombonist took a blustery yet beautiful solo with Darcy James Argue’s brood in Newport a few weeks ago. Ditto for a lyrical romp he provided a few weeks prior as part of Maria Schneider’s Midtown crew. The dude’s an inventive section player. But the new Heavy Dreaming makes a strong case for Keberle being his own man as well. Dramatic writing, dulcet grooves, and plenty of innuendo– there often seems to be more going on than meets the ear in his intricate music. The museum’s splendid auditorium should render all the nuances.
