“Loud Dove” might be the song title that best describes the tenor saxophonist’s approach. Malaby’s blend of lyricism and clamor is one of the elements that make his work so fetching. Like many local leaders, he has an array of ensembles with discrete purposes and distinct tunes. This four-night stand with various groups is a chance to compare and contrast their particulars. Under extra scrutiny will be Novella, a horn-heavy tentette that seems to be smitten with Roscoe Mitchell-like maze designs.
