Olodum

by

Founded in 1979 and dubbed after the West African Yoruba tribe’s name for God, this multifaceted cultural institution blends explosive percussion with reggae-inspired songs of freedom and denunciation. While they can appear hundreds-strong when marching through the streets of Salvador de Bahia during Carnival, this politically engaged samba/reggae unit shrinks to a workable dozen or so spirited drummers, singers, and dancers when indoors.
