Dish No. 45: Peels’ Smoked Trout Sandwich

by

Welcome to 100 Dishes to Eat Now, Fork in the Road’s handy list of some of our favorite dishes — old standbys and new finds alike — compiled daily.

Today’s pick: The smoked trout sandwich ($9) at Peels.

Since it opened a couple of weeks ago, Peels has become the favored lunchtime destination of certain Voice employees. And if its smoked trout sandwich is anything to go by, it’s no wonder.

A multigrain bun the length of a baby’s forearm houses a liberal helping of creamy smoked trout salad, which seems to have been made solely with fish, a bit of mayonnaise, and fresh herbs (the last time we ate it, we tasted tarragon, but that may have been our imagination; whatever it was, it worked). The sandwich also contains some watercress leaves, nice and bitter, paper-thin shards of radish, and tomato slices. All of the produce is fresh, crisp, and flavorful, and stands up well to the salty trout. And the bread is terrific — it’s got a nutty, slightly sweet flavor and plenty of chew. Altogether, it’s a sandwich of ample charms.
