VOICE CHOICES ARCHIVES

James

by

While other ’90s “alternative” bands were hating themselves and wanting to die, James were hating themselves and laughing about it, as evidenced on their bittersweet sex-jam hit “Laid.” This ability to accept life’s foibles continues to be a lyrical theme for the band. The Manchester group, who reunited in 2007 after a short hiatus and released Hey Ma to mixed reviews the following year, just released the second of two mini-albums, The Morning After. On the lavishly textured single “Crazy,” vocalist Tim Booth says, “I’m not crazy/I’m just laughing at myself.” With Ed Harcourt.
