It was reported last week that Sacha Baron Cohen will play Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in a film musical, and I instantly started screeching out a joyful “Bohemian Rhapsody” as a result.
First of all, Cohen has played gay more often than straight, so it’s a very tight fit.
What’s more, he has just the kind of dark spark that should make him a natural for the story’s dramatic elements, not just the wildly flamboyant ones.
And with drag, falsetto, AIDS, and other riveting elements thrown into this kitsch-tinged brew, I feel Cohen might be able to both lift our spirits and break our hearts.
Then again, I thought Jim Carrey was brilliant as Andy Kaufman.
