Now that the Bowery is trendy, it’s fitting that the beautiful old Bowery Savings Bank, designed by Stanford White, has been restored to its 1893 Beaux Arts glory. And tonight, it’s where the best Olympic hopeful boxers from China will take on Team U.S.A. in a 13-bout amateur boxing card titled Empires Collide. Under the supervision of the Chinese Boxing Federation, the event features fighters including 2008 silver medalist Zhang Zhilei (a super heavyweight weighing in at 260 pounds) and light flyweight Zou Shiming, who is regarded as the best in the world in his class. The card will be composed of 10 men’s and three women’s weight classes, and trainers for the event are supervised by the legendary Lou Duva. Team USA boxers were not announced as we went to press, but for more information, go to their website, which features a great photo of the 88-year-old Duva and China’s boxing giant—literally—Zhilei.
