There Is an Actual, Honest-to-God Fat Virus

by

Hey, guess what? Now you can blame your love handles on something other than co-workers who bake or that little “thyroid problem.” According to the L.A. Times, there’s an actual virus that makes kids more likely to get fat (or fatter) than those who are not exposed to it. It’s called adenovirus-36, or “Ad-36” for short. It also causes colds. Because getting sick isn’t bad enough — now you can get sick and fat.

We thought that the one awesome benefit to getting sick was that it would help you drop a few pounds without even trying. But alas! In a recent study published in Pediatrics, it was found that kids who had the antibodies to Ad-36 (meaning their bodies had caught and fought the cold caused by the virus) were an average of 50 pounds heavier than those who didn’t.

Scientists don’t yet know how the virus actually fattens people up, but we think it could do some serious damage if it got into the wrong hands.
