Although Ben Sargent is sadly no longer serving lobster rolls to the people of Greenpoint, he’s keeping busy this week with the kick-off of his second-annual Brooklyn Fishing Derby.
Billed as ‘New York City’s Common Man Competition’ (meaning no boats are allowed), the derby will take place from 12 a.m. on Oct. 1 to sundown on Nov. 21. Fishing will be allowed along the north Brooklyn waterfront from Red Hook to Long Island City, and only bluefish and striped bass are eligible for the competition. All of the rules and regulations can be found on the Brooklyn Urban Angler Web site, where fishermen and women can also register for $40. There will be a kick-off party at Greenpoint’s Dream Fishing Tackle on Thursday; more information can be found on Sargent’s Brooklyn Chowder Surfer site.
