If you make it out for only one DJ fete this weekend starring a Lebanese ex-NBA big man, make it former Miami Heat center Rony Seikaly’s set Saturday night at Lavo. This is apparently a thing Rony does now — our friends at Miami New Times have declared him the World’s Tallest DJ and praised his “spaced-out electronic house music that makes you want to wash an Ecstasy pill down with a $12 Heineken as you sweat 16 pounds away at a velvet-roped nightclub.” Here’s a quick sample:
Lavo, a Vegas transplant with the opulence to make sure you know it, is just getting started at 39 E. 58th Street between Park and Madison (unhelpful website here); cover charge Saturday night is $20, no advance tickets. A bit more background on Rony:
Rony Seikaly is known for his spinning moves around the opposing team’s defense on the basketball court. These skills garnered him the nickname, “The Spin Doctor.” In the last few years Seikaly has become known for a different kind of spinning: music. The former NBA superstar is not new to music or DJing. “Sports will always be my love. But music will always be my passion,” Seikaly-now an in-demand DJ and producer-states. Driving, high energy, and most of all uplifting, Seikaly’s passion for the music is threaded through his seamless mixes. Drawing from all the genres, Seikaly brings the best of the best to the dance floor. Touches of trance-inflected melody lines, dynamic tribal rhythms, subtle yet memorable vocals, a soulful vibe, and an ever-present body-shaking beat all figure into Seikaly’s sets..
Keep your wits about you or the dude will totally box you out.
