Paths of Glory

Dir. Stanley Kubrick (1957).
Stanley Kubrick’s evocation of the World War I trenches shows war’s primary victim as the enlisted man. Its cruel logic compounded by class, the movie might have inspired Dylan’s “Masters of War.” Paths was banned in France until 1974, but the cast—including Timothy Carey in his signature perf—is so American, you have to wonder how it would play in Iraq.
