As spotted and carried away from the intersection of 4th and Bowery this morning. Could this flyer possibility be legitimate? Interscope, Young Money, and Universal are in fact all the same company (if three very disparate wings of it); those are indeed their logos. But is this really how bad it’s gotten, that Universal Records is A&Ring via photocopied, pasted-up pieces of paper? That seemed doubtful. So we called the number, and got a pre-recorded message:
“You have reached the events department. We are conducting the following showcase next month for the genres of hip-hop, r&b, reggae and reggaeton only. In order to perform, you must meet the following requirements: you must be 14 years or older, have one year of recording experience, and not be presently signed to a label. This is for serious talent only. If interested, please leave your stage name and contact number and one of our representatives will contact you soon. If you leave more than one message, you will not be contacted back. Good luck.”
A few red flags here: the “events department”? The “following showcase,” when no such showcase is ever actually specified? And then of course there is the fact we found this flyer caked in mud in the middle of a construction site. Proceed with caution, I guess is what we’re saying. That and if you are a 14-year-old rapper with serious talent we would also be interested in meeting you. Call 212-475-3300?
