Even fine-art neophytes can channel the muse at Blick, a tidy and thoughtfully stocked find in the East Village. The two-level hub boasts an impressive array of professional painting, sketching, drawing, and crafting tools, as well as indefatigably helpful employees and a dizzying assortment of accessible starter projects for beginners. (We feel particularly grateful for the aisle-long array of unusual stencils and a shop clerk’s stern lecture about inhaling spray paint.) Many art-supply hubs have the stock, but no other creative shop in Manhattan has this combination of esoteric professional tools and enthusiastic assistance for amateurs.
