With the resurgence of tiki and hotel bars, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a new speakeasy in the city. Next Friday, 2nd Floor on Clinton, upstairs from Barramundi, will be transformed from secret party room to intimate cocktail den.
With a capacity of just 36 people, the bar is the brainchild of Tony Powe, who owns both Alias and Barramundi. It’s accessed via a staircase at the back of the ground-level Barramundi, where a host greets and seats you. The menu will include cocktails designed by Kenneth Eberle, who did the drinks list at Bar Henry, and a selection of handmade chocolate truffles by Roni-Sue’s. They come in boozy flavors like Absinthe, Dark ‘n’ Stormy, Manhattan, Margarita, and Portly Fig. Drinks include classics and signature cocktails, such as the Tauster, named for Marcus Tauster, an entrepreneur who opened a bank on the very site of this bar and whose dirty dealings landed him in Sing Sing. Now, why does this sound infinitely cooler than cocktails and cupcakes?
