Dir. Yasujiro Ozu (1962).
The Japanese master’s final movie, another tale of a single parent marrying off a diffident daughter, sums up most of late career concerns. The father, played by Ozu regular Chishu Ryu, is a former World War II naval officer; his other children are disconcertingly westernized; his old teacher is an unhappy alcoholic. The movie is a comedy and the images are often stunningly beautiful.
