The dwindling “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy may be on its way out, but that doesn’t make up for the damage it’s already done. Photographer Vincent Cianni explores how DADT has had a serious impact on the lives of service members in a new documentary, Gays in the Military: How America Thanked Me. Cianni previously used his talents to create the book We Skate Hardcore, which documents Latino in-line skaters from Brooklyn’s Southside. His latest work combines photography with live interviews of gay and lesbian active-duty personnel and veterans—including a 91-year-old veteran of World War II. Meet the artist tonight in a discussion after the screening.
