Henry Threadgill’s Zooid

by

As the year closes, we’re getting a deeper look at the composer’s visionary moves. A thick Mosaic box-set accounts for several chunks of music that have been MIA, and This Brings Us To, Vol II finds his current tuba ‘n’ guitar outfit as engaging as ever. Zooid scrambles rhythm gambits, betting on pulse and engaging in sideways syncopation. Its deep cohesion gives even the most abstract passages jittery groove. Thursday’s program finds the group working a string section into the action.
