Or as real enough, as these things go. Obviously rap rivalries of the non-violent variety often do well to boost the profiles of both parties. Minaj has an album, Pink Friday, slated for November 19, while Lil’ Kim has spent years in and out of trouble, grasping for relevance.
That said, this battle feels healthy in the classic newcomer gunning for the throne sense. And though Kim’s artistic complacency hardly gives her steady ground in this battle, her lack of challengers both fortifies her left-over prominence and enlivens Minaj’s attacks.
“Nicki, she’s just mad ’cause you took the spot,” Minaj raps to herself on “Roman’s Revenge,” the Eminem-assisted leak from Pink Friday. “Word, that bitch mad ’cause I took the spot?/ Well, bitch, if you ain’t shittin’, then get off the pot.” Those words, and the rest of the verse, seem pretty directed:
As tends to happen, Minaj vaguely denied the lines were directed at Kim, which didn’t soften the blow at all. Kim responded over the weekend: “I will erase this bitch’s social security number,” and so on.
And then, via It’s the Real, comes the comedic, but pointed take on the situation:
In short, while it’s easy to get excited — or worked up, as in the first video — about the competitive spirit between women in hip-hop, our very emotional friend above has one thing right: empty girl-on-girl hate and smack talk isn’t art. But even if they’re not going to be allies, the fight isn’t fair. In other words, until Kim records some worthy music, the winner, at the moment, is clear.
