It’s Sam Amidon’s skillset as a singer and player that enlivens his interpretations of the ancient with perfectly natural flourishes of the now. His voice is like an invigorating breath of sea air—or the calm, firm hand of a trail guide on your lost shoulder. He’s been doing this for awhile now, each album inching its way into our consciousness like a friendly animal on a shaky tree limb. But on the new I See the Sign, his sure-sighted sense of how much (or, really, how little) to add to a dusty shelf of trad and trad-like folk ballads finds true balance in the hushes between his phrasing, brushes of guitar, and contemporary foundations of electronics, production, and percussion.
