In the age of Swiftenhaal, we can barely remember that time long ago when Britney Spears wasn’t pathetic and was joined at the hip with Justin Timberlake. It had seemed like destiny. What went wrong? The makers of Timberbrit have seemingly asked themselves the same question. The opera imagines Britney’s final concert and an overdue declaration of eternal love from Justin. Composer Jacob Cooper slowed down the hits, added a little vibrato here, a little glissando there, and—voilà—“. . . Baby One More Time” has all the passion of “Nessun Dorma.” Who knew Brit’s canon was so conducive to staged melodrama? J/K.
