The stretch of 8th Street between MacDougal Street and Sixth Avenue is becoming quite the restaurant row: There’s Rabbit in the Moon, Curry Kitchen, Alma 33, and now Tanti Baci Caffé, which was forced to relocate from its West 10th Street locale following disputes with its landlord.
“We’d been having trouble with our landlord about renewing our lease and he kept adding fees to it,” explains owner Hosam Masih. “So I ended reaching out to my customers and pleaded for help.”
We’re all for sticking it to evil landlords, but a glance at the Tanti Baci Caffé website reads a bit more like rounding up the gang to harass the landlord:
After 18 years serving you at this “hole-in-the-wall” that we loved and called home, and so did you!! Our lease has come to an end, and no thanks to a landlord, who could care less about neighbors, or what neighbors want!!! They made it very difficult for us to continue at this location. We are left with no choice but to look for a new home. If it makes you feel any better, they are H M Village Realty 157 7th Avenue south, 212-255-2600, call and let them know what you think.
Masih notes that he and his landlord couldn’t come to an agreement or renegotiate payment terms and he ultimately vacated the restaurant’s premises on November 15. He expects the new location at 41 West 8th Street to be up and running with a full menu in about two weeks’ time. No word if it’ll feature revenge, served cold.
