We feel bad for Jeff Mangum, who probably has some trouble leaving the house in this city without people acting a little strange. So we respect and applaud his decision to return to the stage in secrecy, as he did on Saturday night, when he played ten Neutral Milk Hotel songs to a delighted audience of 75 people at The Schoolhouse. Among them was a bootlegger, of course, who captured the second half of the below setlist, according to Pitchfork:
01 Oh Comely
02 In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
06 King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1
07 Song Against Sex
09 Two Headed Boy
10 Two Headed Boy Pt. 2
International Tapes has the latter five songs, which you can hear here, along with an account of the show that includes copious use of the word “bro” and a metaphor about the audience parting way for Mangum as he left the stage that makes it sound like Moses splitting the Red Sea. Not having seen the show ourselves, we prefer promoter Ben Goldberg’s take: “What I honestly feel like I saw tonight wasn’t The Greatest Musician In The World Performing The Most Amazing Songs Ever, but rather a fantastic musician performing his wonderful songs. God, I have to say that is so much more gratifying than trying to look at it as a life altering event.” Amen to that.
