When Smith Street’s four-year-old Union Smith Café shut its doors recently, plenty of neighbors wondered what would replace the restaurant, which, while not stellar, was a dependable brunch destination. Per Carroll Gardens Patch, its replacement will be Diego, an upscale Mexican restaurant that Ivy Stark will open with the Gowanus Yacht Club’s James Geritano. Whether Stark, the chef behind Dos Caminos, Rosa Mexicano, and Zocalo, will be in the kitchen or just “overseeing” the menu remains to be seen, but given that the place is named after her dog, the chef has already made her mark on the restaurant, which is scheduled to open New Year’s Eve.
UPDATE: Ivy Stark has sent a statement to Grub Street saying that she is “not opening a restaurant in Brooklyn,” but merely helped Geritano find a chef for it. Carroll Gardens Patch, however, is standing by their story.
