They don’t make a musical move without injecting it with sass, but the quartet’s explosive improv is anything but frivolous (and only a smidge sarcastic). Much like the Art Ensemble of Chicago, they blend puckishness with profundity, and their expertise at both has been obvious for a couple of years. Forty Fort is yet another wiseacre triumph, but you really have to see ’em on stage to get the full hit–especially the depth of drummer Kevin Shea’s swinging mania.
