Alan Ferber Nonet

I’m down with the way the trombonist makes his somewhat stately charts swing, as if a library were suddenly doing business inside a jazz hall. His recent experiment with a string section was one of the year’s more intriguing efforts, blending decorum with provocative interplay. Sans the chamber music vibe, methinks his little big band will have the leeway to throw a few more punches. Especially if “The Razor’s Edge” is part of the set list.
