Fanfare and flourish may be two of their strong suits, but the celebrated jazz trio with the pop music know-how has one truly signature element: propulsion. Whether they’re in the middle of a fiery exclamation, or inching their way through a sumptuous ballad, there’s a fierce forward motion at work. This year’s Never Stop was a whirlwind of original pieces that illuminated their expertise with melody–check the addictive wobble of “Bill Hickman At Home” or the gleeful prog of “Beryl Loves to Dance”–and reminded us just how damn tight they are. Watch out for that special New Year’s Eve pricing.
