There Is a Giant, 150-Foot Hole in Park Avenue

The website Scouting New York has photos of what appears to be a rather apocalyptic 150-foot hole, approximately 15 stories deep, smack dab in the middle of the sidewalk between 36th and 37th Street on Park Avenue. A tipster says he thinks it’s a ventilation shaft for the LIRR connection to Grand Central (we’ve reached out to the MTA for comment and will update when we hear back).

For a little perspective, the tipster points out the green dot in the photo below — that’s an MTA worker talking on his cell phone from the depths of 150 feet.

The best time to see the hole is apparently at night — stand above the drop and freak out — this may be the biggest “hole” Park Avenue has ever seen. Or as a commenter put it, “There are so many holes in Park Avenue, we didn’t think anybody would notice.”
