The saxophonist has a tune that throws a shoe at Mister Softee and that annoying jingle of his. But for the most part, that’s the only anger you’ll find on the new It Would Be Easier If. Most of the other pieces are deftly written romps that contain just as much throughly-composed material as improvisational opportunities. Even when the romance and the ragas arise, this is a rigorous affair, full of breakneck turns and edge-of-your-seat juxtapositions that somehow sustain a chamber vibe. With Smokey’s Roundup.
