There are those who’ll buttonhole you into insisting that the best Broadway melodies ever were written by Jerome Kern. Certainly, one of the top five is his “Old Man River,” but will this chanteuse try that one on during her tribute, “Can’t Help Singing: The Music of Jerome Kern”? As directed by Eric Michael Gillett, she may find it wiser to stick to “The Song Is You” and that ilk. Kern wrote with lyricists Oscar Hammerstein, E. Y. Harburg, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, and Ira Gershwin, all of whom are in the top ranks.
